Battle Realms v1.50q Legacy • Windows 10 & 11 • Free • No installation required • ~8 MB

🏆 Built for Battle Realms v1.50q — The Legacy Version

Before Battle Realms arrived on Steam, there was v1.50q — the version that old-school players downloaded, shared, and kept alive for over 15 years. No storefronts, no updates, just a passionate community hosting games through GameRanger night after night.

This is that version. The one most loved by players who grew up with it. This patcher is made specifically for Battle_Realms_F.exe (v1.50q Legacy) and the settings are tuned exactly for it. It is not for the Steam release.

🔧 What Does It Fix?

🎮
GameRanger Hosting
On Windows 10 & 11, hosting a Legacy v1.50q game in GameRanger causes the game to freeze or crash. This tool resolves that completely.
⚙️
DirectX Compatibility
The Legacy version uses DirectX 8/9. DxWnd wraps those calls with a settings profile tuned exactly for v1.50q so they work correctly on modern Windows.
📥
Settings from Server
The tool downloads the exact DxWnd profile for Battle Realms directly from the BenLotus server and applies it to your install. Nothing to configure manually.
🔁
Re-run Safe
You can re-run the tool at any time to re-apply or update the settings. It only downloads and writes what is needed — no registry or system settings are modified.

📋 How to Use

1
Download the tool

Click the Download button above and save BattleRealmsHostingFix.exe anywhere on your PC.

2
Run it as Administrator

Right-click BattleRealmsHostingFix.exe and choose "Run as administrator". Admin rights are needed to install DxWnd to Program Files.

3
Browse for your Battle Realms EXE

Click Browse… and navigate to your Battle Realms v1.50q Legacy installation. Select Battle_Realms_F.exe.

4
Click "▶ Apply Hosting Fix"

The tool downloads DxWnd and the Battle Realms settings profile from the BenLotus server, applies your game path, and launches DxWnd. Takes about 30 seconds.

5
Open GameRanger and host your game!

DxWnd is now running. Launch Battle Realms through GameRanger as usual. Hosting should now work correctly on Windows 10 and 11. Remember to start DxWnd manually before hosting if you close and reopen it.

🛡️ Windows SmartScreen Warning

⚠️ "Windows protected your PC" — This is completely normal!

When you run BattleRealmsHostingFix.exe for the first time, Windows 10 or Windows 11 will likely show a blue SmartScreen popup saying "Windows protected your PC". Do not worry — the file is safe.

This warning appears on any small software that hasn't been downloaded by thousands of users yet. It has nothing to do with whether the software is actually safe or malicious. Microsoft SmartScreen simply flags unsigned apps with low download counts.

ℹ️ How to proceed past the warning
  1. Click "More info" (below the warning text)
  2. A "Run anyway" button will appear at the bottom
  3. Click "Run anyway"
  4. Windows UAC will then ask for admin confirmation — click Yes
✅ What the tool actually does

The tool only does the following — nothing hidden, nothing harmful:

  • Downloads DxWnd (an open-source DirectX wrapper) from the BenLotus server
  • Downloads the Battle Realms settings profile (Battle-Realms.dxw) from the BenLotus server
  • Applies your Battle_Realms_F.exe path into the settings and writes dxwnd.ini
  • Launches DxWnd so it is ready to use immediately

No registry is modified. No startup entries are created. No game files are changed. No personal data is collected. Completely free and open.

❓ FAQ

Does the patcher stay open in the background?
By default, closing the patcher window quits it completely. If you want it to hide to the system tray instead, check the "Minimize to tray instead of closing" checkbox. You can then right-click the tray icon to restore or quit. DxWnd itself runs independently of the patcher.
Do I need to run the patcher every time I want to host?
No — run it once to set things up. After that, you only need DxWnd to be running before you host. Start DxWnd manually from where it was installed (C:\Program Files (x86)\DxWnd\dxwnd.exe) before launching GameRanger.
Can I remove DxWnd if I no longer need it?
Yes. Click the "🗑 Delete DxWnd" button in the tool. It will terminate the process and delete the installation folder. You can reinstall by running the fix again.
Can I re-run the tool to change settings?
Yes — re-running ▶ Apply Hosting Fix is completely safe. It re-downloads the settings profile and rewrites dxwnd.ini with your current EXE path. Useful if you moved your Battle Realms folder or want to refresh the settings.
Does this affect non-hosting gameplay or joining games?
No. DxWnd is only needed when you host. Players who join your game do not need to install anything. DxWnd runs silently in the tray and does not interfere with other games.
The game still freezes when I host. What do I check?
Open the patcher and click "🔍 Diagnostics". It will scan your system and list any issues with DxWnd, DirectX 9, or your Battle Realms installation. Make sure the DxWnd tray icon is visible before you try to host.
Does this work with the Steam version of Battle Realms?
This patcher is built and tested specifically for Battle Realms v1.50q Legacy (Battle_Realms_F.exe). The Legacy version is the one the community has played for over 15 years and is what GameRanger players use. Compatibility with the Steam release is not guaranteed and has not been tested.
Where do I get Battle Realms v1.50q Legacy?
Official: You can purchase the game (includes Winter of the Wolf) on GOG.com at gog.com/en/game/battle_realms_winter_of_the_wolf.

Unofficial: If you already own a paid copy — whether from an old disc, Steam, or an earlier purchase — we believe you shouldn't have to buy the same game again. There are places in the community where you can find it for free, but unfortunately we are not able to provide a copy ourselves.
